Perched atop the weathered wooden posts, the western boots stretched nearly one mile into the horizon. Brown, black, green, gray and blue were the colors. Torn and frayed was their condition.
All the boot heels pointed toward the blue, spring sky. Some of the toes still held their shape — jutting out from the fence post. Others dropped toward the grass like the tongues of cutting ponies after a full morning of sorting cattle.

benefit dinner and auction will be held to help a McLouth man who was burned in a June 4 fire at his home. The event, scheduled for 11 to 4 p.m. July 8, will take place at the Harvest House restaurant in McLouth. George Warren, auctioneer, will auction donated items and Butch and Karen Bartlett and restaurant staff will prepare the meal. Andrew Gibson, 36, whose arms were burned in the fire, underwent skin graft surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
