Tonganoxie man sentenced to 23 years for rape, indecent liberties with child

A Leavenworth County judge Friday sentenced a 37-year-old Tonganoxie man to serve 23 years in prison.

Edward Everitt Peel Jr. had pleaded guilty in May to rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child and indecent solicitation of a child.

Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said Peel was accused of molesting a girl when she was first 6 years old. The molestation occurred between June 2002 and December 2004, while the girl was visiting other children at a Tonganoxie residence.

Thompson said Peel also solicited the child several years later when she was 14 years old.

Leavenworth County District Judge Gunnar Sundby sentenced Peel. Assistant county attorney Cheryl A. Marquardt prosecuted.

Thompson said the crimes occurred before Jessica’s Law passed in Kansas. Under that law, defendants can face life sentences for child sex crimes.
