Fire starts with hay baler, spreads to round bales

July 21, 2011

Tonganoxie Township firefighters battled a fire Thursday afternoon that started with a hay baler and spread to three round bales south of Tonganoxie.

Fire Chief Tim Smith said his department responded about 3:45 p.m. to the fire, which happened in a field on the west side of U.S. Highway 24-40 about a half-mile south of Tonganoxie.

The cause of the fire possibly was a bad bearing, Smith said. The baler was a total loss, he said.

Can anyone tell me why it was necessary for the Leavenworth County Sheriffs department to respond "HOT", lights and sirens, to a baler and hay fire is a field. This just adds to any dangers of truly needed reponding vehicles--the fire department!

Sadly, it seems to be SOP for a lot of LEO's out there. I would assume public safety to be their biggest concern, but it doesn't seem that way. There sure are legitimate reasons to run lights and sirens and exceed the speed limit, but a hay bale fire doesn't seem to be one of them.
