GOLD CUP LIVE: Canada vs. Panama

By Chris Wristen - | Jun 14, 2011

? The 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup makes its LIVESTRONG Sporting Park debut today, and game one features Canada and Panama at 6 p.m. The United States Men’s National Team will take on Guadeloupe at 8 p.m.

6:05 P.M. — READY FOR KICKOFF

Today’s Gold Cup is sold out, but the seats are mostly open as game one gets under way between Canada and Panama.

FIFTH MINUTE — CANADA ON THE ATTACK

The game is only in the fifth minute, but Canada has had the upper hand thus far and unleashed a handful of dangerous opportunities. None were greater than Dwayne De Rosario’ blast from 15 yards out that narrowly missed wide.

Panama is faster and more aggressive thus far while controlling the middle third of the field.

EIGHTH MINUTE — PANAMA THREATENS

Panama finally has made a serious threat. Eric Davis played the ball wide to Luis Henriquez on the left side, but his cross into the box was snagged by Canada keeper Milan Borjan.

12TH MINUTE — PANAMA CONTINUES TO CHALLENGE

A dangerous attack by Eric Davis from the left side was halted when he was tackled clean on the left edge of the box. That set up a corner kick, and Luis Henriquez’ ensuing shot sailed a few feet high.

18TH MINUTE — ANOTHER ATTACK BY CANADA

After a few quiet minutes, Canada’s Josh Simpson weaved through three Canada defenders before misfiring in the box.

19TH MINUTE — PANAMA’S BEST CHANCE YET

Panama nearly found the net with the most dangerous scoring opportunity of the game. Luis Henriquez attacked from the left side and drilled a pass into the box from 25 yards out but Canada keeper Milan Borjan pounced on it and denied the opportunity.

Two minutes later, Luis Renteria was tackled in the box on a debatable no-call, denying a shot from point-blank range.

Canada countered in the 22nd minute with a shot by Josh Simpson that slammed off of a Panama defender.

29TH MINUTE — CANADA AGAIN

A beautiful pass combination baffled the Panama defense and gave Canada its best chance yet. Dwayne De Rosario received a pass on the right side and snuck a through-ball to a charging Julian De Guzman. Guzman’s rocket from 10 yards out drilled the Panama keeper in the chest.

A noticeably partisan Canada crowd is growing louder.

33RD MINUTE — INCHES WIDE

Canada striker Dwayne De Rosario continues to get good looks. This one found the net — the side of it. His attack from the left side missed its target by two feet.

Panama countered with a good look as Eric Davis put a shot on goal.

STOPPAGE TIME

A minimum of one minute of stoppage time will be added to the end of the first half. The game remains scoreless.

HALFTIME

It’s scoreless at halftime between Canada and Panama. Canada has had the upper hand for most of the game in terms of possession. Canada has controlled the midfield and generated numerous dangerous scoring opportunities without finding the back of the net.

SECOND HALF UNDER WAY

Kansas City’s cauldron fan section behind the north goal is the home to a partisan Canada crowd during today’s first game. Decked out mostly in red shirts (the jersey color Panama is wearing), the white-jerseyed Canadians have opened the second half much like the first. They’ve been the aggressors.

Still, three minutes into the half they remain scoreless.

YELLOW CARD

Canada’s Josh Simpson received a yellow card in the 51st minute after poking a Panama player in the eye. It hasn’t been a particularly physical game thus far, but this might be a turning point.

53RD MINUTE

Sure enough, Panama’s Eduardo Dasent is being hauled off on a stretcher after being taken down near midfield.

YELLOW CARD

Canada’s Terry Dunfield has been given a yellow card in the 58th minute for a reckless tackle about 35 yards out from the goal.

GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL

Panama was called for two yellow cards in the box in the 61st minute as Blas Perez (dissent) and Eybir Bonaga (reckless foul) were penalized.

Canada’s Dwayne De Rosario took the penalty kick and buried it into the left corner in the 62nd minute for a 1-0 lead.

70TH MINUTE — PANAMA THREATENS

Panama nearly evened the score on a wheeling chip shot by Luis Renteria in the box, but Canada keeper Milan Borjan leaped, put his right-hand on the ball and nudged it just over the crossbar to preserve Canada’s 1-0 lead.

CANADA ON TARGET AGAIN

Canada nearly struck again in the 77th minute. Mike Klukowski fired a cross to Julian De Guzman at the top of the box. De Guzman struck the ball out of the air and unleashed a cannon right at the Panama keeper.

CAN CANADA HOLD ON?

Seven minutes of regulation, as well as some stoppage time, remain in the first Gold Cup match of the day — and Canada is hanging on by a thread.

Canada leads 1-0, but Panama has knocked on the door multiple times during the past five minutes. Most recently, a scramble in the box was snuffed out by Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

ANOTHER NEAR-MISS

Panama’s Christope Olol sent a header just high of the crossbar in the 86th minute. Panama is running out of time.

STOPPAGE TIME — TIE GAME

Just as stoppage time was being announced, the officials missed a handball on Panama in the box. Off the deflection, a scramble ensued and Panama’s Luis Tejada knocked home a goal. It’s tied at 1-1 with a minimum of three minutes of stoppage time to go.

TIE GAME

Devastated Canada players are sitting on the field in frustration in the wake of a stoppage time goal after a missed handball in the box. The blown and ensuing goal pushed the game into a 1-1 final score.
