U.S. Men’s National Team to play in Kansas City in June

By Staff | Mar 8, 2011

The United States Men’s National Team will place Guadeloupe at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Sporting Kansas City’s new soccer stadium in Kansas City, Kan., as part of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup regional championship.

Pairings were announced today, and Kansas City will play host to a first-round Group C doubleheader. The U.S. team will play in the second game. The first game, which will begin at 6 p.m., will feature Panama against Canada.

“I think it first proves that with the advent of our new stadium, what kind of competition it will bring to Kansas City,” Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said. “I think it’s a proven fact now that having one of the best soccer stadiums in North America, we’ll be getting more and more competitions like this, so I think it’s not only exciting for this time period, but for the future as well.”

An initial allotment of single-game tickets for the Gold Cup will go on sale March 16. Tickets will be included as part of Sporting Kansas City’s season-ticket packages.

The game will mark the third time the U.S. Men’s National Team has played in Kansas City, and the first time in more than 10 years. The first two times were FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 1968 and 2001.

The 2001 game against Costa Rica took place at Arrowhead Stadium in front of a crowd of 37,319. The 1968 match was against Bermuda.
