Tonganoxie teams destined for finals in Tennessee

By Staff | May 5, 2011

There were five teams in Kansas selected to participate May 24-28 in Tennessee for the Global Finals of Destination Imagination and three are from Tonganoxie. In total, there were 12 teams that competed on April 8-9 at the State competition level in Tonganoxie. The teams in attendance were from Overland Park, Hoxie, Tonganoxie, Bonner Springs and El Dorado and competed at elementary and middle school levels.

Destination Imagination is a program that allows students to learn creativity, teamwork and problem solving skills. It is a non-profit organization that reaches around the world. The teams are given a challenge to create a solution to and have several months to prepare the solution. There is no interference allowed by parents and the entire solution is the participant’s creation. Each team can have from two to seven children. They have eight minutes to present their solution including adding a sideshow and an occasional added problem. Also, they participated in a top-secret instant challenge that tests their ability to think on their feet and work as a team. The Tonganoxie Transformers received the highest honor at the competition this year, the Spirit of DI Award for Exceptional Spirit, Teamwork, Volunteerism, or Sportsmanship. The Global competition will take place in Knoxville, Tenn., and will have about 1,000 teams from around the globe.

The Tonganoxie teams going to Global Finals are in need of support to continue with their work. Donations can be made to Community National Bank at 231 N. Main S, Tonganoxie 66086 or (913) 369-0100 care of Destination Imagination.
