The home team on the scoreboard won one game Friday at Leavenworth County Fairgrounds and the team actually playing on its home field won the other game.

It didn’t happen — where or when — as originally planned, but Bonner Springs High and Tonganoxie split a doubleheader that had been scheduled for Thursday at BSHS.

When wet conditions left Bonner Springs’ field unfit for play the games were moved to Tonganoxie, where the Braves remained the home team on the scoreboard and won Game 1, 3-2, before the Chieftains responded with an 8-4 victory in Game 2.

Bonner Springs (8-11) utilized a three-run fifth inning to squeeze past the hometown “visitors” in the first game. With one out and the Braves trailing, 1-0, Luke Porras tripled to the right-field gap to ignite the BSHS run.

After AJ Gidden reached first base on a dropped third strike, Austin Epp scored Porras with a base hit to left field that tied the game.

Gidden then scored when Epp stole second base and the throw by Chieftains catcher Dylan Fosdick went into the outfield.

With two outs, Brian Callahan hit a double over the head of THS right fielder Shane Levy to put the Braves up 3-1.

The fifth was the only inning Chieftains starting pitcher Jeremy Carlisle got into trouble. The left-handed senior threw all six innings and struck out seven batters.

Tonganoxie (7-13) threatened in the top of the seventh inning but came up short. With two outs and two runners on, Dylan Puhr drove in Corey Klinkenberg to cut the BSHS lead to 3-2 before the game ended when Ethan Lorance hit into the team’s third fielder’s choice of the seventh inning.

Dalton Vitt threw all seven innings for the Braves and struck out four batters while giving up just six hits.

Levy slam spearheads THS win

THS didn’t have as much trouble scoring runs in Game 2 and jumped out to a big lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a grand slam by Shane Levy, who belted a home run over the right-field fence.

The Chieftains added two more runs in the bottom of the second, when Lorance doubled to drive in Carlisle and a Ben Williams double to left field plated Lorance.

Bonner Springs, which got one run in the first when Epp scored from third on a passed ball, added one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, but couldn’t get within less than three runs of Tonganoxie.

Callahan drove Shawn Jones home with a single in the fourth to cut the Braves’ deficit to 7-2. BSHS made it 7-4 in the sixth when an infield single by Epp scored Porras and Gidden stole home as Epp stole second base.

Tonganoxie scored the final run of the night in the top of the sixth, when Williams singled to left field, scoring Lorance.

Puhr threw all seven innings for THS in Game 2, fanned 11 Braves batters and allowed just six hits and one walk.
