THS softball loses, 2-1, in regional final
The Tonganoxie High softball team made it all the way to a regional championship game Tuesday at Field of Dreams before coming up one run short of extending its season.
The Chieftains' defense played errorless softball for seven innings but couldn't get enough offense to knock out the tournament's No. 2 seed, Basehor-Linwood, and lost, 2-1, bringing their season to a close.
After a seven-run spark in the seventh inning of an 8-1 semifinal victory over No. 1 seed Atchison earlier Tuesday afternoon, a similar inning alluded the Chieftains (11-11) against defending Class 4A state champion BLHS.
The Bobcats weren't having much luck offensively, either, however. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that Basehor broke a 1-1 tie that had lasted four innings. Candice Jennings struck a double to the left-field gap to put BLHS ahead for good at 2-1.
Senior TIffany Jacobs, who threw every single pitch for THS in its three-game regional run, gave her team its first and only lead of the game in the top of the second inning with a solo home run.
BLHS pitcher Brooke Redmond drove in her team's first run of the regional final with a double in the second inning to tie the game at 1.
Haley Smith was 1-for-3, Jacobs went 1-for-2 and Makayla Leslie finished 1-for-2 in Tonganoxie's season-ending loss.
