Abdallah Shrine Rodeo kicks up boots this week in Tonganoxie

By Shawn Linenberger - | May 24, 2011

When the Abdallah Shrine Rodeo gets under way Thursday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds, it will mark the longstanding rodeo’s fifth year in Tonganoxie.

The overall 52nd annual Abdallah Shrine Rodeo kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday a few blocks to the west of U.S. Highway 24-40 on Kansas Highway 16 in Tonganoxie. The rodeo took place in Wyandotte County for several years, but the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds — the former home to the rodeo — were displaced with the development of the Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kan.

The rodeo will start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and feature team roping, steer wrestling, calf roping, mutton busting, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, barrel racing and bull riding.

Also on Thursday, at the start of the rodeo, this year’s rodeo queen will be crowned. There are two candidates this year: Tonganoxie’s Paige Boylan and McLouth’s Cheyenne Patton.

There also will be a craft show each day at the fairgrounds and, from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, a car show will take place. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, of all kinds — new, classic, custom and stock — are welcome. A donation of $20 is requested for each entry. Registration is 10 a.m.-noon.

Tickets can be purchased at B&J Country Mart, 319 Ridge St. in Tonganoxie, or the Shrine Rodeo office, 5300 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park. The Shrine Rodeo office is open 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., though it will close at noon Thursday and Friday. The deadline for purchase by phone is 11 a.m. Thursday, and walk-in purchases will end at 11 a.m. Friday.

Only general admission seats are available at B&J Country Mart, which is open 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m. throughout the week.

Tickets also can be purchased starting at noon each day of the rodeo at the rodeo sales booth at the fairgrounds.

Family fun tickets, which consist of two general admission adult and two general admission youth tickets, as well as four hot dogs and four soft drinks, can be purchased for $40 online.
