Council increases chamber funding
The Tonganoxie City Council agreed Sept. 26 to fund the Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce an additional $2,500 for 2011.
Chamber director Susan Freemyer and President Donna Hoegler said the changes the chamber has made this year, including the hiring of Freemyer — who was hired as an employee rather than an independent contractor and thus subject to Social Security and other required benefits — and the moving of the office downtown, has consumed the $5,000 the city budgeted for the chamber for 2011.
The chamber has added 20 new members since Freemyer started, but Hoegler said they were given a 30 percent discount as a promotion with the chamber’s 30th year and paid pro-rated fees based on less than a full-year of membership. Their recruitment should put the chamber in good financial shape next year, she said.
The chamber is also getting a lot of traffic on its Facebook and Twitter accounts, Freemyer and Hoegler said. And the chamber’s goal is to teach businesses the value of social media and to give members more value from their membership, overall, they said.
The additional $2,500 would help with the chamber’s coming Spooktacular and Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting, the women said.
