The ongoing struggle that has been the Tonganoxie High football team’s 2011 season continued Friday night at Beatty Field with the Chieftains’ fifth straight loss, a 37-7 beating at the hands of Lansing.

Although THS opened the second half with a scoring drive that cut the Lions’ lead to six, LHS put together three touchdown drives in the next eight-plus minutes to put a stranglehold on its road victory.

After a scoreless first half, Tonganoxie (1-5 overall, 1-5 Kaw Valley League) was in a 13-point hole on homecoming night before finally breaking through with a TD drive — and a quick one at that — in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

Chieftains senior kicker Amos White sent the second-half kickoff high and short and it was muffed by Lansing and recovered by THS sophomore Wyatt Weeks at Lansing’s 36-yard line.

Five plays and 36 yards later (with 29 of those coming from Tonganoxie junior quarterback Garret Elston), the Chieftains were on the scoreboard with 10:11 to go in the quarter after Elston kept the ball on a two-yard TD run.

The Lions (3-3, 3-3), however, responded by bludgeoning their opponents with five straight runs for 58 yards via senior running back Nick Hughes before LHS senior QB Litton VanDerWerff ran for a three-yard score, putting Lansing up 13 once again.

Tonganoxie’s next possession ended with a punt, while Lansing’s next series lasted all of two plays, the second of which was a 57-yard TD run by Hughes up the right sideline.

When the Chieftains turned the ball over on an option toss from Elston to Derek Lingo on the opening play of their third possession of the second half, LHS answered with another touchdown, taking a 34-7 lead with 2:06 to play in the third.

THS had four takeaways in the loss — Eric Tate recovered a fumble, Jordan Boudreaux controlled a muffed punt return, Weeks recovered the opening second-half kickoff and Jared Sommers held on to an LHS fumble at the bottom of a dog pile — but also turned the ball over three times.

Tonganoxie, which has lost four straight games by at least 30 points, plays its final home game of the season Friday against Perry-Lecompton in the first week of district play.
