Tonganoxie volleyball gets 2 wins at Baldwin

By Mirror Staff Reports - | Oct 14, 2011

Tonganoxie High’s volleyball team faced a pair of schools it had already defeated this season on Thursday at a triangular and repeated those earlier results with two wins.

The Chieftains took on both Baldwin and Bishop Ward for the third time this year and swept both matches at Baldwin. THS defeated the home team, 25-17, 25-19, and handled Ward, 25-15, 25-11.

Junior Jenny Whitledge led Tonganoxie in both aces (three) and kills (10) against Baldwin. Senior Sagan Scates dished out all 21 of the Chieftains’ assists in the match and senior Megan Hummelgaard got to a team-high 12 digs.

THS (27-10) had just swept Ward at home two days earlier and put the Cyclones away quickly again at Baldwin.

Scates went for 25 assists in the Thursday victory and both senior Kailan Kuzmic and Whitledge delivered nine kills. Brooklyn Kerbaugh led Tonganoxie with three blocks, while Kuzmic and Hummelgaard finished with five digs apiece. Both Scates and Kuzmic served two aces.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bonner Springs, Tonganoxie will play its regular-season finale.

Sub-state brackets will be announced on Wednesday. The other seven teams in the Chieftains’ bracket will be Basehor-Linwood, Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, De Soto, Piper, St. James Academy and Sumner Academy.

The sub-state tournament will be played Saturday, Oct. 22 at SJA, in Lenexa.
