Tonganoxie volleyball wins at BSHS; sub-state next
Tonganoxie High's volleyball team will enter the postseason on a seven-match winning streak after closing out the regular season with a Tuesday victory at Bonner Springs.
The Chieftains won their final Kaw Valley League dual, 25-21, 25-12, 25-13.
THS (28-10 overall, 5-2 KVL) won with big nights from its senior class. Sagan Scates led the team with 40 assists, Megan Hummelgaard tallied 18 digs, Brooklyn Kerbaugh and Kailan Kuzmic had three blocks apiece, Kuzmic served four aces and Kerbaugh went for 12 kills.
Tonganoxie junior Jenny Whitledge tied for the team lead in both kills (12) and blocks (three). Kuzmic added 11 kills to the Chieftains' attack.
Sub-state at St. James
With the regular season over, THS will next take the floor Saturday at a Class 4A sub-state tournament at St. James Academy, in Lenexa.
Tonganoxie received the No. 3 seed in the bracket and will square off once again with KVL rival Basehor-Linwood, the No. 6 seed, in the first round. The match will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of a 2 p.m. match between No. 2 De Soto and No. 7 Bishop Ward.
The Chieftains have played BLHS four times this season and have won the last three meetings.
Three-time defending state champion St. James (35-1) is the No. 1 seed in the bracket.
