Chieftains’ season ends in sub-state semi
Tonganoxie High’s volleyball season came to a close Saturday with a sub-state semifinal loss to De Soto at Saint James Academy, in Lenexa.
The Chieftains, after beating rival Basehor-Linwood in the first round, won the first game against DHS before the Wildcats took the next two for a 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 victory.
Junior Jenny Whitledge led THS (29-11) with 18 kills in the season finale. Senior libero Megan Hummelgaard finished the match with 11 digs and senior Brooklyn Kerbaugh had a team-high five blocks.
Senior Sagan Scates set up 33 of the team’s 34 assists and both Scates and fellow senior Kailan Kuzmic served two aces.
Tonganoxie advanced to the semifinal by beating Basehor-Linwood for the fourth time this season.
Though the Bobcats took an early one-game lead, the Chieftains responded by winning the next two and took the match 19-25, 25-14, 25-15.
Scates had 37 assists in the victory, which featured 13 kills from Kuzmic, 11 from Whitledge and 10 from Kerbaugh.
Both Kuzmic and Whitledge had 10 digs in the win and Hummelgaard finished with eight. Whitledge served four of Tonganoxie’s five aces.
Not surprisingly, host and No. 1 seed St. James (40-1), the three-time defending Class 4A state champions, won the sub-state tournament by defeating De Soto in the final.
