Chieftains soccer without 5 in loss
Shorthanded for its road debut Tuesday night at Atchison, the Tonganoxie High boys soccer team lost, 3-1.
The Chieftains were without five of their top 16 players and only played two subs at AHS.
THS actually took a 1-0 lead early in the first half. Senior captain Matt Briggs scored on a shot from the right side, about 16 yards out, that went off the far post and back into the net.
Just a few minutes later, AHS tied the match by scoring off a deflection in the box following a free kick.
Not too long after that, Atchison took the lead for good on a penalty kick by Evan Wheeler.
Tonganoxie coach Brian Kroll said his team had "tons of opportunities" to score in the second half and played great, possession wise, but just couldn't finish with a score.
The Chieftains (1-2-1) allowed a final score when Wheeler found a hole in the defense and pushed it up the field for a goal.
THS was without starters Matt Saathoff, John Lean, Joseph Parrino and Conner Kietzmann, as well as Shane Starcher. Kietzmann is out for the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee. Saathoff broke a bone in his hand and is expected to miss two to six weeks. Lean has a large bruise on his right foot and should return soon. Starcher was ill Tuesday and Parrino was out of town.
At 6 p.m. Thursday, Tonganoxie plays at Perry-Lecompton.
