Chieftain baseball falls to Lansing in extras

By Mirror Staff Report - | Apr 25, 2012

The Tonganoxie High baseball team battled Lansing to a 4-4 tie after seven innings Monday, but the Lions got the last laugh.

The Chieftain (3-12) allowed three runs in the top of the ninth and dropped a 7-4 decision at home.

Lansing struck first with two runs in the opening frame and added one more in the third, but THS went in front with four runs of its own in the bottom of the third. The lead was short-lived, though, as the Lions tied things up with a run in the fourth.

Neither team scored again until LHS broke through with three runs in the ninth. The Chieftains failed to respond in the bottom of the inning, allowing the Lions to escape with the win.

Senior Austin Harkrader took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs in 8.1 innings. He struck out eight batters and walked six. Senior Ben Williams and sophomore Shane Levy each drove in two runs at the plate.

Lansing’s win capped off a season sweep of the Chieftains, who suffered a 10-0 loss April 10 at LHS. Coach Mitch Loomis’ squad will return to action at 2:30 p.m. Thursday when it faces Spring Hill in the first round of the Butch Foster Memorial Baseball Classic.
