Mirror wins 24 awards at Kansas Press Association convention

The Mirror recently was recognized for winning 24 awards at the Kansas Press Association convention in Overland Park.

The newspaper received recognition at the Awards of Excellence reception, including seven first-place plaques. The Mirror competed in the non-daily division I category.

The April 21 honors followed up 2011, when The Mirror won 25 awards and was named the Sweepstakes award winner, which goes to the top overall newspaper in each division.

Here is a list of awards The Mirror won:

First place

• Best online video (feature) about prison produce distributed in Tonganoxie.

• Best online video (news) about the Leavenworth County Fair.

• Design and layout excellence

• Feature photo, news editor Shawn Linenberger, captured at the first day of school.

• News and writing excellence

• Series writing, by former Mirror reporter Elvyn Jones, for a series of stories about the 2011 USD 464 bond election. Jones now is at the Baldwin City Signal, one of The Mirror’s sister papers.

• Youth story, Linenberger for “Etched in the record book.” The story was about a Tonganoxie Elementary School student who has read hundreds of books, following in the footsteps of his older brother.

Second place

• Agricultural story, Jones, for “In the driver’s seat for safety.” The story was about an event promoting farm safety.

• Government/political story, Jones, for “Meals on Wheels provide more than meals.”

• Investigative story, Jones, “Highway intersection may be too costly,” about a busy intersection on U.S. Highway 24-40 in Tonganoxie.

• News photo, Linenberger, “Friends visit crash site.”

• Sports pages.

• Sports story, former sports editor Benton Smith, who now works in the sports department at the Lawrence Journal-World, “Focused on the field,” about the Tonganoxie High football team playing days after former coach Mark Elston resigned.

• Youth story, Linenberger, “No shoes, new shirts, community service,” about THS students who go barefoot for charity.

Third place

• Best front page.

• Best newspaper website.

• Best use of photos.

• Editorial pages.

• Education story, Jones, “Space solver,” about proposals for the USD 464 bond issue.

• Feature story, Jones, “Daily Thanksgiving,” about a young cancer survivor.

• Investigative story, Jones, “Population increases 86 percent since 2000.”

• Local business story, Jones, “Sad country swansong,” about Annie’s Country Jubilee’s closing.

• Religion story, Jones, “City, church at odds over new sign on highway,” about a new sign outside West Haven Baptist Church.

• Sports story, Smith, “Back in action,” about McLouth High School’s Trevor Roberts, a former football player who had to have part of his leg removed following a football injury. A custom running prosthetic had him back working out the following spring.
