Two-vehicle accident in Tonganoxie sends one person to hospital

December 20, 2012

One person was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries following a two-vehicle accident Thursday morning in Tonganoxie.

The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. at U.S. Highway 24-40 and Stone Creek Drive.

Genevive Lynch, 38, Lawrence, was attempting to pull on to U.S. 24-40 from Stone Creek Drive from the north when her 1996 Ford Windstar struck the passenger side of a 1993 Ford Thunderbird driven by Stephen Lane, 22, Nortonville.

Lane was headed east on U.S. 24-40 and Lynch was attempting to head east when the accident occurred.

Lynch was taken by Leavenworth County Emergency Medical Service to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for neck injuries and facial lacerations from airbag deployment, Tonganoxie police Chief Jeff Brandau said.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, reports said.

We should start keeping track of all the accidents at this intersection.

Records are kept by KDOT and recent inquiries show this intersection is the most dangerous in the highway corridor within city limits. Speed limits were recently reduced but it will not totally prevent human errors in judgment at this intersection.

It's in a bad spot. Traffic is coming over the hill very fast. If you're driving a big truck or towing a trailer it's not uncommon to be in the middle of the intersection already committed to going when you first see the traffic coming but can't go fast enough to make it through without them slowing down too. Since there are no stop lights for a long way in each direction there are fewer natural breaks in traffic like there are at other intersections that allow a person an opportunity to get through.

It's also so wide there it's hard to tell which lane people are in and whether they are going straight or turning. It's about the equivelant of six lanes wide there because there is room between the left turn lanes and the traffic lanes.
