Chieftain power preparing for next meet
It's been nearly two weeks since the Tonganoxie High powerlifters have faced off against live competition, but the team's next action is just around the corner.
The Chieftains will try to build on their fourth-place performances Feb. 4 at Wamego when they head Saturday to the Horton Invitational.
Since kicking off the season Jan. 7 at the Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Invitational, three lifters have established themselves as consistent threats. Sophomores Jessica Rubio and Cole Holloway, as well as senior Makayla Sample, are undefeated through the team's first three meets. All three won their respective weight classes at Basehor and Wamego, as well as the Hoyt-Royal Valley Invitational on Jan. 28.
Sophomore Jordan Boudreaux also earned a gold medal in Wamego. It was his first of the season.
Saturday's trip to Horton will be the Chieftains' final regular-season meet. After that, they'll set their sights on the Class 4A state meet, which will take place March 3 in Abilene.
The 2012 Chieftain squad is comprised of 21 lifters, including four seniors. That group, which helped start the powerlifting program as freshmen, includes Sample, Parker Osborne, Tyler Stockman and Derek Lingo.
