Late run by Tonganoxie girls not enough to upend Bonner Springs

February 18, 2012

Bonner Springs (17-1) defeated Tonganoxie 60-55 on Friday by fending off a late rally by the Chieftains.

The Braves led by double digits for most of the game, but allowed Tonganoxie to make a late run and get back into the game.

“I felt like we played 30 good minutes tonight,” coach Clay Oakes said. “We made some bad decisions late when we were trying to run some clock and we had some crucial turnovers.”

Tonganoxie was effective at working the ball inside to Emma Stilgenbauer who scored nine of her 19 points in the fourth quarter.

For most of the game, though, it was all Yessinia Hernandez and Anna Deegan as Bonner Springs led by double digits most of the game.

Hernandez led the team with 20 points and Deegan scored 19 in the game. The team’s offense flowed with Hernandez either getting inside the lane against Tonganoxie’s defense and shooting or passing the ball to an open teammate.

Hernandez and Deegan took over the game in the second quarter. The score was 18-16 at the end of the first quarter. The two teams were relatively even in the first period.

In the second quarter, though, Bonner Springs outscored Tonganoxie 15-5. Hernandez scored seven points for the Bobcats and was effective at running the team’s offense. On defense, Bonner Springs allowed just five points in the quarter, forcing turnovers and rebounding missed field goal attempts.

The score was 33-21 at halftime and the point-scoring differential in the quarter was the difference in the game.

“For three quarters I thought we played pretty well, but in the second quarter we quit attacking and we didn’t defend very well,” coach Randy Kraft said. “Other than that quarter we played even.”

The Braves led 42-32 entering the fourth quarter when the Chieftains launched a late run.
