Methodist churches in McLouth, Tonganoxie competing in soup drive

By Staff | Jan 31, 2012

The Giants and Patriots aren’t the only ones with hopes of a big Super Bowl weekend.

McLouth United Methodist Church has conducted a Souper Bowl Challenge among its members, a canned soup drive in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. This past year, McLouth collected roughly 3,300 cans of soup.

On a recent Sunday, McLouth UMC challenged its friends at the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church to “compete” in this year’s Souper Bowl Challenge.

Rev. Jeff Clinger showed a video during a Sunday service that McLouth UMC Rev. Morgan Smith created. Smith “officially” challenged the Tonganoxie church to a soup collection competition.

The two churches already have combined to collect nearly 4,000 cans.

Clinger has issued a bit of a challenge himself: If soup collections reach 5,000 cans, Clinger will have his head shaved after services Sunday at the church.

For more information about donating, contact Tonganoxie UMC, 328 E. Fourth St. in Tonganoxie, at (913) 845-2814 or McLouth UMC, 400 Summit in McLouth, at (913) 796-6589.
