Shawnee Mission Northwest alum and current mixed martial arts commentator Sean Wheelock will host an MMA referee and judge training seminar Saturday through Sunday at the Overland Park Convention Center.
The seminar will be sanctioned by the Kansas State Athletic Commission and will be taught by Rob Hinds, an MMA referee and one of just six people certified to teach such a seminar. Hinds has more than 4,100 MMA bouts of refereeing experience in Ultimate Fight Championship, Bellator and other promotions.
The seminar is expected to draw people from around the country, including fighters, coaches, gym owners and athletic commission employees. Wheelock said he one day hopes to take the seminar international. All those who complete the training will be certified by the Association of Boxing Commissions to work as a mixed martial arts referee and/or judge.
Wheelock, who still resides in Shawnee, began commentating for Bellator in 2010 after years spent calling Super Bowls and World Cups for the BBC. Bellator is the second-largest MMA organization behind Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The event is public, and those wishing to register may write firstname.lastname@example.org or call 913-422-0100.
