Letter to the editor: Another successful Library Run

By Staff | Jun 19, 2012

To the editor:

On June 9, runners and walkers gathered in front of the Tonganoxie Public Library for the 25th annual Tonganoxie Library Run. The Friends of the Library have done a commendable job of organizing this event for the past 25 years. I’d like to thank this organization, this year’s race director, Debbie Zerrer, other volunteers and race sponsors for their efforts and support in making this race happen.

Let’s hope it continues. The Library Run is a great kickoff to Tonganoxie Days. It brings local residents and out-of-town runners to the downtown area and drops them into the heart of the action as the booths along Fourth Street open for the day.

The money raised by the run is beneficial to our local library, supporting programs and library acquisitions. Step inside the library any day and you will see how important it is to children and adults in the community.

Just as important as the economic benefits are the social and recreational benefits. The Library Run is a healthy and fun activity that families can participate in together. What fun to track your personal times from year to year, medal in your age group and cheer your family members and friends across the finish line. The special fee for family units makes it possible to sign up all the kids and attracts runners and walkers who may not sign up for any other organized race during the year.

Organizing such an event is a time-consuming job. It involves sponsors, police and volunteers who design, place orders, pick up materials, pack bags, collect registrations and work on the streets and at the finish line on the day of the race. I hope that everyone who appreciates this annual event will let the Friends of the Library know and that there will be no shortage of people volunteering to help so that the run can continue for another 25 years.

Pam Slawson,

Tonganoxie
