Tonganoxie Recreation Commission to have summer kickoff party Saturday

By Shawn Linenberger - | May 28, 2012

The Tonganoxie Recreation Commission invites the community to its annual Summer Kickoff Party, which will be 5-7 p.m. Saturday at Chieftain Park.

Free hot dogs and drinks will be served.

This year’s main attractions are a children’s bike decoration contest and bike parade at 5:30 p.m. Children are encouraged to decorate their bikes at home and join TRC for a lap around Chieftain Trail to help the commission celebrate National Trails Day. Prizes will be awarded to some of the more creative bikes. TRC officials remind those attending to bring their helmets.

At 6 p.m., TRC will honor members of its Wall of Fame. This year’s honorees are longtime summer ball umpires Dorothy Dunlap and John Evans II.

Festivities will conclude with the Silly Critter Pet Show. People may enter their special critter in the Cutest, Best Dressed, Pet/Owner Look-a-Like, Fluffiest or Best Trick category. The registration fee is $5 and all proceeds go to local animal group Have-a-Heart.
