• The Jefferson County Historical Society will host an art show for all Jefferson County high school art students promoting their artistic talents from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The show will be in the John Steuart Curry Boyhood Home and Museum on the grounds of Old Jefferson Town in Oskaloosa. Featured will be the students’ photography (black and white, color and digital imaging), drawings, acrylics, oils and watercolors, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and mixed media. Each area high school art department has been invited to participate and exhibit the works of their students. The historical society wishes to recognize the quality work in the fine arts department of area high school students by hosting a countywide art show, scheduled annually, on opening weekend at Old Jefferson Town, which always is the first weekend of May.

• There will not be a meeting of American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 41 in May due to Mother’s Day. The group will meet in June.

The McLouth Alumni Banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at McLouth School Cafeteria and Purple (North) Gymnasium. All graduating seniors, alumni and faculty (past and present) are welcome. Cost is $5 per person and $8 per couple. A meat entree will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish. Classes of 1963, 1973, 1988, 2003 and 2013 will be recognized. There will also be giveaway and raffle items donated by local businesses. Contact Alayna Powell 785-865-8774 with questions.

• The 1962 class picture (last year’s 50-year class) has been restored. It had been badly damaged by the sun and the elements. Gene Petrie, who works at Hallmark, knew a subsidiary firm related to Hallmark that did restoration work. This picture was sent to them and they worked their magic. They could not repair it to 100 percent, but it is much better. It will be on display at this year’s banquet. Funds were raised at last year’s banquet for this and they are always hoping for more. A class can raise money for its composite’s restoration, but any money donated to the general cause must be undesignated. Cost of each restoration is estimated between $300 and $400. The old frame will be used, but the glass will be replaced with a new glass that will reduce UV damage.

There is a checking account at the Bank of McLouth – “McLouth Alumni Association Restoration Fund” for donations and to pay for these tasks. Phyllis Petrie, Kathleen McConnell and Ron Fowler have started the task.
