THS basketball teams fall at Piper

Girls come up short, boys suffer lopsided loss

December 17, 2013

— The Tonganoxie High girls bounced back from a slow start, but came up short at the end of a 45-40 loss Tuesday at Piper.

After cutting an 11-point lead to six by halftime, the Chieftains (0-2, 0-2 Kaw Valley League) continued to chip away in the third quarter and eventually drew even on a bucket by Katelyn Waldeier with 2:21 left in the period. That's as close as THS got, though, as the Pirates (3-2, 2-1) scored the next six points and led by two possessions the rest of the way.

Emily Soetaert led Tonganoxie with 16 points and Waldeier added 12. Haley White led Piper with 16.

The Chieftains (0-2, 0-2 Kaw Valley League) started slow offensively, falling behind 9-0 midway through the first quarter. Piper used the slow start to take a 17-6 lead at the end of the period, but THS limited the Pirates to six second-quarter points and cut the deficit to six at the break, 23-17.

THS will host Anderson County at 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
