The McLouth High boys opened their home tournament with a tight win against Jeff West, but dropped their next two on the way to a fourth-place finish.

The Bulldogs (6-6) opened tournament play with a 54-50 victory against the Tigers on Tuesday. They used a 22-point second quarter to take a 31-18 lead at halftime, then held off a second-half rally by JWHS to earn a spot in the semifinals.

Carter Gish and Nick McAferty led the Bulldogs with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

MHS couldn’t replicate its success in the semis, as it dropped a 49-39 decision to eventual tournament champ Atchison County Community High School. The Bulldogs jumped out to a five-point halftime lead, but couldn’t find an answer for a second-half surge by ACCHS.

Drew Cerny led the way with 15 points and Gish added 11. The Bulldogs will play ACCHS again on Feb. 12. The Tigers improved to 12-0 with their tournament championship and are currently ranked No. 5 in the Class 3A poll.

McLouth tried to close out tournament play with a win against Jefferson County North in the third-place game, but couldn’t overcome a seven-point first half in a 50-29 loss to the Chargers.

The Bulldogs fell behind after one quarter, 12-6, and managed just one point in the second. JCN took advantage and stretched its advantage to 23-7 at the break. MHS scored 22 points after halftime, but the final outcome was never in question. McAferty led McLouth with eight points.

Coach Jason Schroeder’s squad will try to get back in the win column when it travels Thursday to Maranatha.
