The Tongie Tidal Waves didn’t leave Tonganoxie Water Park with a win in their second meet of the year, but improvement was still evident both in and out of the water.

The Tidal Waves dropped a 252-212 decision to the Leavenworth Riptides on Friday, but several swimmers led the meet with individual and relay titles under their belts. The meet featured nearly 200 swimmers between the two teams.

Official times were recorded at last week’s season opener against Bonner Springs, as coach Janet Falk wanted to give new swimmers and parent volunteers a chance to adapt to live competition. Leavenworth brought a team nearly three times the size of Bonner Springs, but according to Falk, the extra week of preparation paid off in a big way.

“The kids knew where to go and the parents were much more comfortable doing their jobs,” Falk said. “People just weren’t as up tight or stressed. As a whole, I think it was a good experience for the visiting team, as well as our team. I felt like our kids really did their best and we represented Tonganoxie in a very positive way.”

The Riptides won in similar fashion last season, taking a 236-195 decision in Leavenworth, but Falk attributed last year’s loss to a disadvantage in number of swimmers. This year’s rosters were nearly equal, but the Riptides — like all other East Kansas Swim League teams except for Tongie — have the advantage of advanced training in an indoor facility.

“Those kids can swim year-round, but our kids don’t get in the water until the last part of May,” Falk said. “We’re at a disadvantage, so we’re always playing little catch-up.”

Despite the team loss, several swimmers earned multiple top-three finishes. David Falk led the way with four event titles, winning the 18-and-under boys freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and individual medley.

Mikayla Rhoads (freestyle, butterfly, individual medley) was a three-event winner in the 8-and-under division, while Alex Falk (butterfly, breaststroke, individual medley) accomplished that same feat at 12-and-under. Meanwhile, Silas Kirchoff (freestyle, backstroke) and Stella Bradley (freestyle, backstroke) were both two-event champs in the 6-and-under.

The Tidal Waves also did plenty of damage in relay competition, combining for eight titles.

The team will compete in its third consecutive home meet at 7 a.m. Friday when it welcomes Piper to town. Just like last week, Falk said the meet will feature two teams with similar numbers.
