By Justin Nutter - | Jun 18, 2013

Tonganoxie High is one of 262 schools from the U.S., Canada, China, India, Mexico and New Zealand being recognized by the Character Education Partnership for promising practice in character education.

THS won the award for the creation of its Students Respecting Students organization. The group was formed to help make the school an all-inclusive environment that helps students better respect each other.

“We’re pretty excited about the award and the program,” THS principal Jamie Carlisle said. “We knew we had something special when it began, and now we’re convinced of that.”

Other Kansas schools to win the award were Pittsburg, Hays-Thomas More Prep, Hoisington, Iola, Towanda-Circle and Pray Woodman Elementary in Maize. An awards ceremony will take place Oct. 24-26 in Washington, D.C. Winners will be featured on the CEP website and in the organization’s magazine.
