Alex Adams went a combined 4-for-8 in McLouth High's doubleheader against Perry-Lecompton on Tuesday.

? Some late-game heroics led to a split when the McLouth High softball team welcomed Class 4A Perry-Lecompton to town on Tuesday. However, with several scoring chances left on the base paths, the pair of game left something to be desired.

The Bulldogs stranded 13 runners in a 4-2 loss in the opener, then needed a late rally for an 8-7 win in the nightcap, in which they blew a six-run lead.

“I think our mindset as a team is off right now,” coach Ballard Patterson said. “We’re not emotionally in it. We’re worried about a lot of things other than softball.”

MHS (11-4) got a chance to take a big lead early in the first game, as it loaded the bases in each of the first two innings. But the only runs came on a bases-loaded walk by sophomore Angela Dailey in the first and a hit-by-pitch in the second. Junior Konner Patterson, who was hit three times in the game, got the RBI in the second.

The Kaws evened the score with two in the third and went in front with two more in the fourth. Meanwhile, Patterson’s squad sputtered at the plate. The Bulldogs got several runners on base, had just three hits and stranded seven in the final five innings.

Freshman Dominique Tullis and senior Alex Adams each had two hits in the loss. Freshman Shannon Greene took the loss in the pitcher’s circle.

The Bulldogs seemingly turned things around in the second game, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings for a 6-0 lead. Once again, though, their bats went silent down the stretch and PLHS took advantage. The Kaws made it 6-2 with a two-run fourth and tied the game with four more in the fifth.

McLouth let a golden opportunity get away when it loaded the bases with no out in the fifth, but failed to get any runners across the plate. The Kaws took their first lead of the game with a run in the seventh, giving themselves a chance to hand MHS its second sweep of the season.

The first two MHS hitters went down in order in the seventh, but the Bulldogs got new life when senior Taylor Pope reached base on a fielding error. Konner Patterson then roped an RBI triple into right field to tie the game, and Adams ended the game with an RBI infield single.

“I couldn’t swing at anything that wasn’t my pitch,” Adams said of her game-winner. “I’m happy that we did it. We were still a team even when we were down. That shows us how strong we are. We’re going to pick everybody up and just come out here and play the game.”

Adams, Greene, Konner Patterson and sophomore Hannah DePriest each had multi-hit games. Dailey went the distance in the circle for the win.

The Bulldogs will return to the field today for a make-up game at Maur Hill. The game was called because of adverse weather on April 22. They will resume play with a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
