One year ago, Turner quarterback Paul Berry torched Tonganoxie High through the air, as well as on the ground. In Friday’s rematch at Beatty Field, Chieftain signal-caller Tyler Ford flipped the script.

Ford threw for 158 yards, ran for 97 more and accounted for three touchdowns as Tonganoxie cruised to a 43-22 homecoming victory against the Golden Bears.

The Chieftains (5-1, 4-1 Kaw Valley League) amassed 479 yards of offense — 321 on the ground — to avenge last year’s 32-13 loss. They dominated possession from start to finish, picking up 27 first downs in the victory.

“Our kids have done a great job of spreading the ball around, being unselfish and just wanting to win,” coach Al Troyer said.

Troyer’s squad jumped out to a 14-0 lead when Cole Holloway and Ford scored rushing touchdowns on the team’s first two drives. Turner (1-5, 1-5) got on the board on the first play of the second quarter when Berry found Derion Boose for a 27-yard touchdown pass on fourth and 21. Ford answered with a scoring pass of his own — a 16-yard strike to Maleak Gibson — and the Chieftains took a 21-6 lead into the break.

Gibson’s touchdown catch — his third of the season — came shortly after he intercepted Berry on Turner’s first drive. The Chieftain defense stiffened after Berry’s early touchdown pass, coming up with fourth-down stops on Turner’s final two drives of the half.

“We were disappointed in the long pass in the first quarter, but we adjusted pretty well,” Troyer said. “They still moved the ball, which we knew they would, but overall, I can’t be happier. We got (Berry) at times, but he got us at times.”

Holloway, who led all ball carriers with 144 yards, scored his second touchdown of the night on a six-yard run late in the third quarter, making it a three-possession game. Jared Sommers added a one-yard run and Ford found Ben Johnson for a 50-yard score to make it 43-6 in the fourth quarter. Like Gibson, Johnson picked off a Berry pass shortly before his score.

Berry threw two touchdown passes in the final period, but the game was already out of reach. He threw for 203 yards in the game, but was just 15-of-31. He was 19-of-23 for 288 yards in last year’s meeting.

Meanwhile, Ford enjoyed arguably his best passing performance of the season, going 13-of-19. He now has nine touchdown passes this season, compared to just two interceptions.

“The plays the receivers are making these days are unbelievable,” Ford said. “I’m just putting the ball up there and they’re making the plays. The work in the weight room is definitely showing how much we’ve progressed over the last year.”

Luke Carey led the defensive charge with a team-high eight tackles and a sack. Sommers and Jordan Boudreaux each added seven stops.

The Chieftains will open Class 4A district 2 play next week when they welcome Perry-Lecompton to town. The Kaws (3-3) shut Tonganoxie out in last year’s meeting, 30-0.

“We’ve got to go in every week thinking we’ve got to get it done,” Ford said. “We can’t look forward to next week or the week after that. We’ve got to focus on this week and get better.”
