Kansas: Brownback ‘delighted’ by Michelle Obama’s upcoming visit

By The Associated Press - | Apr 28, 2014

? Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback says he’s delighted that first lady Michelle Obama plans to visit Topeka next month.

WIBW NewsNow reports Brownback said Friday in an interview that the first lady’s visit May 16 is great recognition for the community.

The governor also said the visit recognizes the importance of the Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court declaring segregated schools unconstitutional.

Mrs. Obama plans to speak during a ceremony honoring high school seniors from five Topeka schools the day before they graduate. Her event also is a day before the 60th anniversary of the Brown decision.

She had planned to speak on May 17 to a combined graduation ceremony, but those plans generated protests over concerns that seating for graduates’ families would be limited.
