A head-on collision Monday claimed two drivers west of Tonganoxie.

The accident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Kansas Highway 16 near 235th Street a few miles west of Tonganoxie.

A 1997 Ford F-350, driven by Bart H. Kissinger, 46, Oskaloosa, was heading west on Kansas Highway 16 when it sideswiped the trailer of an oncoming 2008 Ford F-350, driven by Gerald L. Hartshorn, 66, Tonganoxie. Kissinger’s truck then collided head-on with a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Brandon L. McKinsey, 39, Tonganoxie, according to Kansas Highway Patrol reports.

Kissinger and McKinsey were pronounced dead at the scene.

McKinsey was headed east and was traveling behind Hartshorn’s vehicle. Debris from the vehicles involved in the head-on collision struck a third vehicle headed east, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Ronald D. Grover, 59, Bonner Springs.

The drivers of the vehicles involved in the head-on crash were pronounced dead at the scene.

Kissinger was not wearing a seat belt, while McKinsey was wearing a safety restraint, reports said. Others involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts and were not injured, including Laura L. Hartshorn, 53, Tonganoxie, a passenger in the F-350 carrying the trailer.

The wreck closed the highway down for nearly six hours. The Kansas Department of Transportation reported the road was opened back up to traffic just before midnight.
