Chieftain basketball teams win at Turner

The Tonganoxie High basketball teams both got back on the winning track Tuesday at Turner. The Chieftain girls cruised to a 53-17 win, while the boys defeated the Bears, 57-33.

The Tonganoxie girls (6-10, 3-7 Kaw Valley League) pitched a 15-0 shutout in the first quarter to set the tone. They never allowed more than seven points in a quarter. With the win, they snapped a four-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Bears (1-15, 0-10) remain winless in league play.

Katelyn Waldeier and Emily Soetaert led Tonganoxie with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Chieftain boys (8-8, 5-5) entered the second half with a six-point lead limited Turner (3-13, 1-9) to just 12 second-half points. The victory improved Tonganoxie's season record back to an even .500.

Jack Dale led Chieftain scoring with 12 points and Ben Johnson added 10 in the victory.

Tonganoxie will be back at home Thursday for a makeup game against Lansing, then it will travel Friday to face Bishop Ward at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
