The Tonganoxie High boys went toe-to-toe with two of the state's top teams last week. Unfortunately, though, neither hard-fought battle resulted in a win.

THS came up short against a pair of games to top-five opponents, falling to No. 2 Basehor-Linwood in double overtime Tuesday, 77-69, and dropping a 62-58 decision Friday against No. 4 Piper.

The Chieftains (7-8, 4-5 Kaw Valley League) cut an eight-point deficit to with less than 30 seconds left in Friday's visit from the Pirates, but couldn't quite complete the comeback. PHS (11-4, 6-3) entered the final period with a 49-43 lead and extended it to eight early in the period.

THS started to chip away at the deficit, and a layup by Jared Sommers made it 60-58 with 28.4 seconds left, but Piper's Vincent Eskina hit two free throws about 15 seconds later to make it a two-possession game for good.

The Chieftains' four-point loss came to the same Piper team they lost to by 29 points on Dec. 17.

"They're a good team," coach Shawn Phillips said. "The first time around when we played them, I think our effort level was awful and our execution was even worse. When we played them (Friday) we played hard, but we just didn't finish enough shots."

Sommers had a big night, leading all scorers with 16 points on a 6-of-9 shooting effort. He was joined in double figures by Jack Dale, who scored 13.

Three days earlier, Phillips' squad welcomed rival Basehor-Linwood (13-2, 8-1) to town for a game that took two extra periods. THS got a 30-point outing from James Grizzle and led in the final seconds of regulation, but a 3-pointer by Basehor-Linwood's Zach McNabb forced a 61-61 tie and sent the game to overtime.

BLHS led late in the first overtime period, but a conventional 3-point play by Tyler Ford forced a second overtime. Foul trouble caught up to THS down the stretch, as it was outscored by the Bobcats in the final period, 10-2.

The 30-point night was Grizzle's second in three games. Dale and Ford added 14 and 10 point respectively.

"We've been preaching to our kids about playing hard, playing smart and playing together," Phillips said. "I think they've really bought into that. There were so many kids from both teams making big plays. I'm happy with the effort that we put in."

THS enters this week with three chances to gain ground in the league standings. The Chieftains will open Tuesday at Turner, where they won in overtime a year ago. They'll be back at home Thursday for a makeup game against Lansing, then travel Friday to Bishop Ward.
