By Justin Nutter - | Jan 21, 2014

The McLouth boys will try to push their current win streak to five games when they open McLouth Invitational Tournament play at 6 p.m. against Maranatha Christian Academy.

The third-seeded Bulldogs enter the game at 5-3 overall, including a 4-1 mark in 2014. They defeated No. 6 MCA in a Jan. 9 meeting at home, 88-73. If they win tonight, they’ll advance to the championship semifinals, where they’ll face the winner of Heritage Christian and Oskaloosa.

In its most recent action, McLouth took a 71-59 decision Friday at rival OHS. Drew Cerny and Nick McAferty led the scoring output with 26 and 15 points, respectively, and Cerny pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Wyatt Hermann also had 10 boards in the win.

In today’s other tournament action, top-seeded Valley Falls will play No. 8 Atchison County Community High School and No. 4 Jefferson County North will face No. 5 Wathena-Riverside. MHS took fourth at its home tournament a year ago.

MHS girls get first road win

The McLouth girls picked up their second win of the year Friday with a 55-48 victory at Oskaloosa. Seven players scored in the contest.

The win caps off a sweep of the Bears, as MHS (2-6) also won a 44-39 decision Dec. 20 at home. The Bulldogs will be back in action Thursday at Maranatha, then they’ll play in a tournament next week at JCN.
