Chieftains boys win, girls 2nd at P-Ridge cross country meet

Another meet, another win on the cross country course for the Tonganoxie High boys.

Powered by fourth top-10 finishes, the Chieftains won their fifth team title of the season Thursday at the Pleasant Ridge Invitational.

Ethan Phillips won his first individual championship of the season with a time of 18 minutes, 4.98 seconds, beating out runner-up Luke Oatney of Pleasant Ridge by more than 16 seconds. Drew Cook (18:26.21) was third overall, while Garrett French (19:07.18) and Brad Andrews (19:10.26) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Dylan Staatz came in 22nd, Chandler Hamman was 26th and Justin Patrick was 37th to round out the team’s day. The Chieftains scored 43 points in the team standings, beat out the hosting Rams by 13.

McLouth was also on hand for the meet and tied Christ Preparatory Academy for fourth place with a team score of 93. Ryan Bristol led the Bulldogs individually, placing 12th with a time of 19:11.8.

The THS girls also enjoyed a strong outing, finishing second with a score of 56. Emma Campbell led the way with a fourth-place time of 16:42.84. She was joined in the top 10 by Isabella Behm (seventh, 17:02.4) and Emily Williams (10th, 17:19.16).

Also on hand for the girls were Emily Chambers (16th), Mia Bond (19th), Tressa Walker (23rd) and Hope Creten (24th). Christ Preparatory Academy won the girls team title with 46 points.

The McLouth girls finished last in the team standings with 188 points. Ceara Funk was the team’s only top-25 finisher, coming in 25th with a time of 18:32.26.

THS will get its final tune-up for regionals next Thursday when it runs in the Kaw Valley League meet, hosted by Bonner Springs at Wyandotte County Park. The girls took second and the boys third at last year’s league meet. Meanwhile, McLouth will run in the Northeast Kansas League meet the same day at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence.
