THS football drops meeting with Lansing

By Staff Report - | Sep 19, 2014

Tonganoxie High is still in search of its first win after a 37-12 loss Friday at Class 5A Lansing.

The Chieftains (0-3, 0-2 Kaw Valley League) trailed by two touchdowns after the first quarter and the Lions (1-2, 1-2) never allowed a comeback. THS struggled to move the ball all night, finishing with just 203 yards of total offense.

“You get to the point where you’re stressed and you try to press things a little,” coach Al Troyer said. “We continued to run our offense, but we had some miscues here and there.”

Carl Hecht was 11-of-27 passing for 114 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Burge in the fourth quarter. Jared Sommers led the rushing attack with 48 yards and a touchdown on five carries. He was also Hecht’s favorite target, hauling in seven catches for 79 yards.

Defensively, the Chieftains allowed 407 total yards. Lansing quarterback Krystian Abbott was 14-of-22 passing for 117 yards, including a touchdown pass to fellow senior Kenneth Banks. Meanwhile, Dewaun Wilkes picked up a team-high 135 rushing yards and three scores on 18 carries.

Abbott, the league’s leading passer a year ago, also got it done with his legs Friday, rushing for 67 yards on just five carries. As a team, the Lions combined for 217 yards on the ground.

“They made some plays,” said Troyer, who added that 53 of Wilkes’ yards came on a play in which the defense missed an assignment. “Banks is a good receiver, and we just didn’t have an answer late in the game for Abbott, not necessarily throwing the ball, but running it.”

THS will be back at home next week against Frontier League opponent De Soto. The Wildcats opened their season with a 70-8 win against Harmon, but have been shut out in their last two contests against Paola and St. James Academy.

“It’s a solid game,” Troyer said. “They’ve got a good run defense, so people haven’t put up a lot of numbers on them. They’re a Frontier team, so you know they’re going to try to run and pound the ball, so we’ve got to be ready to stop that.”
