The Tonganoxie High golf team opened its season April 8 with the Mill Valley Invitational. The team placed 13th out of 17 teams. Matt Scharff led THS golfers with an 80, while Ben Lanza shot a 99, Dawson Jones a 101 and Noah Arthoad a 103. Heath Martin finished with a 113.
Mill Valley proves to be too much for THS baseball

The Tonganoxie High baseball team looked primed to get a victory against Kaw Valley League powerhouse Mill Valley on Thursday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. THS fell in the opening game, 11-2, but started to get things going late in that game, which seemed to carry over into game 2.
Chieftain soccer falls at home after strong week

The elements haven’t been that inviting on the Tonganoxie High soccer team’s home field. There have been a few games in which the team has had to battle into the wind. Monday was no different as the Chieftains fell, 5-0, to Baldwin at the THS soccer complex. The Bulldogs got up early on THS and never looked back. BHS scored three goals in the first half and then dropped in another couple goals in the second half for the shutout victory.
Tonganoxie softball’s offensive domination

The Tonganoxie High softball team has shown early on that it can play in a slugfest. THS improved to 4-0 on the season with its doubleheader sweep April 15 against Bonner Springs. The Chieftains won, 11-1 and 22-13 on their way to the big doubleheader sweep. Bonner Springs opened the game with a 1-0 lead after an inning, but THS responded in a big way. The Chieftains scored five in the third inning and then four in the fourth. Another two runs in the fifth forced the mercy rule to be enacted and the Chieftains had an 11-1 victory in five innings.

The Tonganoxie High track team represented itself well at its home meet last week at Beatty Field. Though some competitors didn’t participate because they qualified for the Kansas Relays last weekend, the Chieftains were able to finish second as a team on the boys side and third in the girls division. David Scharff placed fourth in the 100 with a time of 12.07 seconds, while Kyle Fain took fifth in the 400. Drew Cook turned in a big performance in the 1,600, taking the silver medal with a 4:59.34 time, about 2.5 seconds behind Kansas City Christian’s Luke Rovenstine.
Tonganoxie groups continue to evaluate future options for shared buildings

Several local entities are trying to get ducks in a row as they look to move forward with upgrading facilities. Tonganoxie City Council Member Kara Reed gave a PowerPoint presentation Monday during the council meeting. She, along with fellow Council Member Jim Truesdell, are on the local infrastructure committee with representatives from the school district, recreation commission, library board and police department. One by one, representatives discussed challenges they’re facing. Many talked about more space needed for storage and work area.
Mirror recieves Kansas Press Association awards for its 2014 work

The Mirror newspaper picked up several awards at Saturday’s Kansas Press Association Convention in Junction City. Newspapers from across the state compete in the Awards of Excellence competition. Members of the Washington Press Association from Washington state judged the many daily and weekly newspaper entries. The Mirror won 10 awards in non-daily division II, which is the middle-sized division among three for the non-daily newspapers.
Accept the Chiefs’ Challenge in Tonganoxie

Teams are starting to roll in for the inaugural Tonganoxie Chiefs’ Challenge. Organizer Monica Gee with the Tonganoxie Friends of the Police said between 10 and 14 four-person teams have either signed up or indicated they plan to participate in Saturday’s event. Overall, as of Monday night, Gee was expecting 20 teams so far. She expects several more teams to sign up on challenge day, which is Saturday in Chieftain Park.
