By Staff | Apr 22, 2015

Teams are starting to roll in for the inaugural Tonganoxie Chiefs’ Challenge.

Organizer Monica Gee with the Tonganoxie Friends of the Police said between 10 and 14 four-person teams have either signed up or indicated they plan to participate in Saturday’s event. Overall, as of Monday night, Gee was expecting 20 teams so far. She expects several more teams to sign up on challenge day, which is Saturday in Chieftain Park.

“Most folks don’t sign up ahead of time,” Gee said.

Tonganoxie Police Chief Jeff Brandau and Tonganoxie City Fire Chief Jack Holcom will have a special one-on-one challenge before the obstacle course challenge begins. Gee said. There are eight obstacles involved in the course, with one lap through constituting a half-mile.

The event begins at 4 p.m. with an opening ceremony. The Chiefs’ Challenge starts at 4:15 p.m., while the obstacle course challenge gets started at 4:30 p.m.

The event starts at 4 p.m. April 25 with an opening ceremony in Chieftain Park. At 4:05 p.m., there will be a demonstration and explanation of the chiefs’ uniforms. Then at 4:30 p.m., the team challenges will begin and at 5 p.m., there will be a youth decorated bicycle parade and helmet fitting.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and water will be served from 4-6 p.m., with proceeds benefiting Tonganoxie Friends of the Police.

The awards ceremony will start at 6 p.m., the Glazed Doughnut Throw at the chiefs begins at 6:15 p.m. and the Tonganoxie Split Ice Cream Social gets started at 6:30 p.m.

Concessions, participation bags, helmets and shirts are available while supplies last.

Registration is $20 for each team of four participants.

Residents are encouraged to get their teams of four together to compete in the course challenge that’s designed to be a fun activity for participants.

The event is a benefit for the Tonganoxie Friends of the Police. Gee said proceeds will help with startup costs for the organization and events and supplies for the department. For instance, TFOP members hope to expand the offerings of the women’s safety classes through money the organization raises.

Gee said she was impressed with the outpouring of assistance from local businesses, as well as interest in the event in general.

“We’ve already had a lot of interest and participation,” Gee said. “A lot of businesses have been very supportive of it.”
