Tonganoxie softball’s offensive domination

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 22, 2015

The Tonganoxie High softball team has shown early on that it can play in a slugfest.

THS improved to 4-0 on the season with its doubleheader sweep April 15 against Bonner Springs.

The Chieftains won, 11-1 and 22-13 on their way to the big doubleheader sweep.

Bonner Springs opened the game with a 1-0 lead after an inning, but THS responded in a big way.

The Chieftains scored five in the third inning and then four in the fourth. Another two runs in the fifth forced the mercy rule to be enacted and the Chieftains had an 11-1 victory in five innings.

Halley Calovich had three hits for THS, as did Sierra Graham and Audrey Miller. Miller also had three RBI, while Mackenzie Sample had two RBI and Calovich one.

Maria Howard pitched all five innings, striking out three.

In the second game, Tonganoxie had to deal with some hot Bonner Springs bats, but the Chieftains answered with offensive firepower of their own.

Each team scored runs in every half-inning but one — BSHS failed to score in the bottom of the seventh.

THS led, 2-1, after an inning and 6-4 after two. It was 8-5 after three and then 9-6 after four innings before even more offensive fireworks erupted.

THS led, 12-6 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but BSHS answered with five runs of its own and trimmed the margin to 1, 12-11.

The Chieftains, though, never trailed. Another four runs in the sixth and six in the seventh pushed the team to the 22-13 victory. THS had 20 hits on the day while committing four errors. Bonner Springs tallied 16 hits and had just one error.

Reagan Bennett had four hits, as did Lizzy Mills, while Delaney Fenoglio had three hits. Taylor Lee forced two walks, while Lauren Willson and Sample each had a walk.

Sample again produced when it counted, as she accumulated six RBI. Miller had three RBI.

Mills pitched 6 1/3 innings, fanning six batters in that span. Fenoglio pitched to the final two batters.

Tonganoxie will take its undefeated mark into its first home games of the year later this week.

The squad plays a 4 p.m. doubleheader Thursday against Turner at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
