Hitting on all cylinders

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 29, 2015

Tonganoxie High softball had two major tests last week against Lansing, but the Chieftains survived them and are still undefeated.

THS fell behind the Lions, 5-0, after two innings, but the Chieftains, like so many times previously this season, responded with their bats.

Tonganoxie made it 5-1 in the bottom of the second and then took the lead in the third inning thanks to a seven-run outburst.

LHS scored another run in the fourth, but yet another big Tonganoxie proved to be too much for the visiting Lions. THS posted four runs in the bottom of the fifth and extended its lead to 12-6. Lansing added another run in the top of the seventh, but the rally wasn’t large enough and THS prevailed, 12-7.

Audrey Miller and Taylor Lee each had three hits in the victory, while Sierra Graham forced two walks. Lee knocked in 4 RBI, while Miller had 3 RBI in the victory.

Maria Howard pitched the full seven innings, allowing 7 runs on 12 hits. She also had three strikeouts.

THS 5, LANSING 4

The second game had its share of thrills in the Chieftains’ closest game of the season to date.

THS built up a 4-1 lead by scoring single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.

Then came a Lansing rally.

The Lions pushed three runs across in the top of the seventh and tied up the game at that point.

In the bottom-half of the inning, the Chieftains loaded the bases before the Lions pitcher hit a Tonganoxie batter, forcing a gamewinning run in as the team won, 5-4.

Lizzy Mills worked all seven innings on the mound, giving up 10 hits on 4 runs. She also had 2 strikeouts.

Delaney Fenoglio had 3 hits and Calovich 2 hits in the game. Lauren Willson, Mackenzie Sample and Sierra Graham each had a walk, while Miller had 2 RBI and Willson and Fenoglio 1 each.

THS 15, TURNER 3 (5 inn.)

Thursday’s first game at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds was a bit different than the last one April 21.

Tonganoxie jumped on Turner early and never looked back in a 15-3 victory.

THS scored in every inning but the third, amassing 14 hits.

Fenoglio pitched all 5 innings and threw a 5-hitter. She also had 3 strikeouts.

Reagan Bennett had 4 hits, while Willson and Finoglio each had 2 hits. Sample forced 3 walks and Miller, Lee and Finoglio had 3 RBI each.

THS 9, TURNER 2

Tonganoxie didn’t build as early of a lead in the second game of the doubleheader, but the Chieftains still posted a commanding victory.

THS led, 1-0, after the first inning and then put together four-run innings in the fourth and fifth innings.

Turner mustered two runs in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as Tonganoxie prevailed, 9-2.

Finoglio hurled another 5-hitter on the mound.

Sample and Finoglio had 2 hits each Calovich forced a walk. Miller knocked in 3 RBI, Sample had 2 and Willson 1 RBI.

The victories improved the squad to 8-0 on the season.

Tonganoxie played Piper on Tuesday after The Mirror’s deadline.

The team won’t be back in action until next Tuesday with a doubleheader at Basehor-Linwood.

The team then returns home for another doubleheader May 7 against Mill Valley at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
