British soccer camp returns to Tonganoxie

By Staff | Aug 4, 2015

An annual camp in Tonganoxie had about 25 youths learning the ins and outs of soccer recently.

The Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp took place July 20-24 with youths ages 5-8 going in the morning and those ages 9-14 participating in the evening.

Rains the first morning kept youths off the Chieftain Park field.

Sessions originally were set for three hours, but were extended to four hours the remaining four days to make up for the postponement. The older youths went at the regular times.

“It was really hot that week, but they do an awesome job of making sure the kids do get long breaks,” said Brad Eccles, assistant Tonganoxie Recreation Commission director. “Especially with the younger kids being there for four hours. They let them rest up in breaks of 10-15 minutes.”

Participants received T-shirts and soccer balls. Youths who registered a month in advance received free jerseys. Posters also were handed out.

Eccles said the organization does camps throughout the country but is based in Lenexa.

Fall brochures sent out

TRC recently sent out its fall brochures.

Flag football registration was last week, while the fall soccer registration deadline is this Friday.

The rec commission is offering flag football for the first time in more than a decade. Tonganoxie will have four teams in second and third grades, as 24 youths signed up. Right now, youths in grades 4-6 likely will have one team, as there were fewer signed up for the older division. Eccles said right now that team likely would have to travel for games, possibly playing in Eudora.

The deadline for adult co-ed softball and volleyball is coming up Aug. 14.

Softball is played on Tuesday and Thursdays at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. Volleyball is set for Wednesdays at Tonganoxie Middle School.
