The Southern Leavenworth County Leadership Development organization is seeking applicants for 2015-16. The group, which celebrated 25 years earlier this year, is taking applications through Sept. 2. Class members range from high school seniors to retired residents. Students learn about personality and leadership traits, as well as local and state government, communication, teambuilding and other skills during the nine-month class that meets monthly.

The Leavenworth County Humane Society is a step closer to having its own building. Lansing City Council voted unanimously Aug. 6 to approve a conditional use permit for LCHS, Inc. The permit allows the organization to build and operate a no-kill pet animal shelter in the Lansing Business Center. The permit must be applied for and renewed in 2020. LCHS is the only organization working to build and operate a no-kill pet animal shelter serving all Leavenworth County residents.
