Campers hit field for final instruction of summer

By Shawn Linenberger - | Aug 12, 2015

Tonganoxie High School fall sports teams will open the season Monday with the start of preseason practice.

Before the older student-athletes embark on a new season, younger athletes were sharpening their skills last week.

The THS football team had its youth camp on the high school practice field for four days. The camp, which THS coaches and players conducted with assistance from other youth coaches, finished up Thursday.

The camp allowed younger players to work on their skills before youth programs get underway for the fall.

It marked the final youth camp of the summer, as numerous sports conducted camps for youths in high school and younger.

On Monday, Tonganoxie will join McLouth and other districts across the state in opening practices for cross country, football, volleyball and boys soccer.

Tonganoxie residents who are night owls likely will see some activity early Monday morning.

Some teams will continue their recent tradition of starting their first practices of the year at the earliest time possible: midnight Monday morning.

THS cross country, football and boys soccer will have practices at midnight. THS volleyball will get started later that day.

Teams will have a few days to practice before school starts with a half-day Aug. 20.

THS teams will have public scrimmages later this month and then will dive into their respective schedules. Some squads will open their seasons this month, while others will have their openers in September.

Parent meeting set for Monday

Tonganoxie High activities director Brian Engelken will have an informational meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Tonganoxie Performing Arts Center.

All parents of student-athletes competing in fall sports at Tonganoxie High School are encouraged to attend.
