Southern Leavenworth County Leadership Development seeking applicants for 2015-16

By Shawn Linenberger - | Aug 12, 2015

The Southern Leavenworth County Leadership Development organization is seeking applicants for 2015-16.

The group, which celebrated 25 years earlier this year, is taking applications through Sept. 2.

Class members range from high school seniors to retired residents. Students learn about personality and leadership traits, as well as local and state government, communication, teambuilding and other skills during the nine-month class that meets monthly.

Tuition is $150, which covers the cost of the class for each student.

Class members will meet for some classes at the Basehor Community Library, but will have field trips for other monthly classes, including visits to the Lawrence Journal-World, Free State Studios/Wow! Channel 6, the Dole Institute of Politics, Kansas Statehouse and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site. Students also will visit the prison in Lansing and the Leavenworth County Courthouse and Leavenworth County Justice Center.

Outside of class time, students will be required to participate in a class project. Past projects have included assisting local senior citizens and donating volunteer time at the Leavenworth County Council on Aging. Another class organized a food and supplies drive, while a recent class raised funds for the message sign at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds and the refurbishing of the 4-H building’s interior.

Last year’s class started a database of SLCLD alumni and organized an event and silent auction celebrating 25 years of the class at Holy-Field Winery.

Graduates have included several local businesspeople, top students in their classes and past and current elected officials.

For more information about the class and to obtain an application, visit the class page on Facebook.

The first class is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 23 at Basehor Community Library.
