A Leavenworth County liquor store allegedly sold liquor to a minor during an undercover operation conducted by the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office and Alcohol Beverage Control.

Between 2 and 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, the Sheriff’s Office and ABC sent a 19-year-old into nine liquor stores in the county with the intent to purchase liquor.

Of those stores, one business allegedly sold liquor to the minor. An attendant at a store in Leavenworth failed to request identification from the minor at the point of sale.

During the bust, ABC served the store with an administrative citation that affects a liquor license, while the Sheriff’s Office completed the criminal investigation of furnishing alcohol to a minor. Charges will be forwarded to the Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office, said Undersheriff Jim Sherley.

The other eight stores, one in Leavenworth, three in Tonganoxie, two in Basehor and two in Lansing, did not allow sales to the underage customer.

The operation was part of a cooperative grant-funded effort utilizing Project LEAD funds. Project LEAD grant funds are available to the Sheriff’s Office to combat underage drinking.

The Project LEAD Coalition, working with the Wyandotte/Leavenworth Regional Prevention Center, focuses on reducing underage drinking in Leavenworth County through education and enforcement efforts.

The Sheriff’s Office often uses the grant money for DUI check lanes, saturation patrols and operations as described above.
