McLouth High basketball teams open winter with new coaches

Several new faces can be seen on the bench for McLouth High boys and girls basketball teams this year.

Zack Carlton is the new boys basketball coach, with Sean Carter his assistant coach.

Kristie Clark is the new girls basketball coach, with former MHS player Kylie Shufflebarger serving as assistant coach.

Carlton replaces Jason Graf, while Clark replaces Graf’s sister, Lindsey Graf, who also formerly served as athletics director.

The MHS boys and girls basketball teams will start the season Friday against Jefferson County North at home. The teams then hit the road for a Dec. 8 date with Horton and Dec. 11 games in Leavenworth against Immaculata.

The squads are back home Dec. 15 against Oskaloosa and finish out 2015 on the road near Easton for Dec. 18 games against Pleasant Ridge. The teams open up 2016 with Jan. 5 games against Maur Hill-Mount Academy. On Jan. 8, the teams travel to the Holton area for road games at Jackson Heights. On Jan. 16, Heritage Christian visits McLouth before the teams travel Jan. 15 to Valley Falls.

McLouth again will host boys and girls tournaments in late January. The McLouth Invitational Tournament will be Jan. 18-23.

On Feb. 2, MHS teams travel to Winchester to take on Jefferson County North. Immaculata makes a return trip to McLouth on Feb. 5. The teams travel Feb. 9 to Oskaloosa and then host Horton on Feb. 11 and Pleasant Ridge on Feb. 12. Games Feb. 16 will be in Atchison with road games against Maur Hill-Mount Academy.

McLouth teams finish out the regular season with home games Feb. 19 and Feb. 26 against Jackson Heights and Valley Falls, respectively.

Substate will be Feb. 29-March 5 and state March 9-12.

McLouth students have the option to wrestle with the Oskaloosa squad. The first wrestling competition of the season was Tuesday in Oskaloosa. The squad then competes at 9 a.m. Saturday in Effingham in the Atchison County invitational. Next on the schedule is the Onaga invite on Dec. 12 and Pleasant Ridge on Dec. 19. That concludes the 2015 portion of the schedule, with a trip to Burlington on Jan. 9 being the first competition of 2016. It’s then on to Holton for competition Jan. 22 (junior varsity) and Jan. 23 (varsity). Jan. 30 the squad heads to Atchison and Feb. 4 the team is in Wathena to take on Riverside.

The OHS wrestling team then goes Feb. 5 to Burlingame and Feb. 13 to Cottonwood Falls for a competition at Chase County. Regional and state meets follow later in February.

Tonganoxie boys and girls basketball teams open the season Thursday at Baldwin. Teams travel again Dec. 11 to Ottawa before the home openers Dec. 15 against Bonner Springs. That starts a four-game home stand for THS. The teams host Basehor-Linwood on Dec. 18, Piper on Jan. 5 and Lansing on JJan. 8. On Jan. 12, the teams are in Kansas City, Kan., to take on Turner and then back home Jan. 15. The Tonganoxie Invitational will be Jan. 19-23.

On Jan. 26, THS teams are host to Heritage Christian and then hit the road for five straight games: Bishop Ward (Jan. 29), Piper (Feb. 5), Bonner Springs (Feb. 9), Basehor-Linwood (Feb. 12) and Lansing (Feb. 16).

The regular season concludes with home games Feb. 19 against Turner, Feb. 23 road games in Shawnee against Mill Valley and Feb. 25 against Bishop Ward.

The THS wrestling squad also starts the season Thursday with a dual in Holton. The Chieftains then travel Dec. 5 to Wamego for a tournament there. The Eudora Tournament of Champions is Dec. 11 and 12 in Eudora. THS has its first dual competitions Dec. 17 in Ottawa against both Ottawa and Santa Fe Trail. The Randy Starcher Memorial Invitational is Dec. 19 in Tonganoxie for the Chieftains’ final competition of 2015.

THS travels Jan. 7 to Spring Hill for a dual against the Broncos and then Jan. 9 to Louisburg for an invitational there. It’s then on to Basehor-Linwood on Jan. 15 and 16 for the Bobcat Classic and Jan. 23 to Holton for the invitational there. On Jan. 30, the Chieftains compete in the Baldwin Invitational and Feb. 4 are back home for a dual against Bonner Springs. The Kaw Valley League meet is Feb. 13, regionals Feb. 19-20 and state Feb. 26-27.
