University of Saint Mary to present ‘Babes in Toyland’

The University of Saint Mary theater program will spotlight a magical production and entertain a few thousand theatergoers next week with “Babes in Toyland.” The play is the 2015 edition of the university’s annual Christmas season theater production.

Small but mighty group with Tonganoxie wrestlers

Ross Starcher’s second edition of the Tonganoxie High wrestling team is expected to be a competitive one. Starcher, the former THS standout who served six years as an assistant coach, enters his second season as the head wrestling coach. The Chieftains have 18 wrestlers out this year, four of whom qualified for state as freshmen last year.
Tonganoxie High soccer lands 3 on all-state team

Tonganoxie High soccer players have been named to all-state teams. Tyler Novotney (first team) and Logan Williams and Alex Kroll (both second team) were named to the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association all-state soccer team.
Tonganoxie High debate team heading to four meets this weekend

The THS debate squad maximized its travel opportunities this just before Thanksgiving by competing at five area events Nov. 21. Sophomores Gage Smith and Jacob Derzinski earned a sixth seed in elims with their 4-1 preliminary record in competition at Topeka High. They dropped to Blue Valley in the quarterfinals and finished fourth. Others debating at Topeka were seniors Spencer Finkbiner, Emma DeMaranville and Hunter York; juniors Michael Mast, Scott Kirk and Austin Ballard.
Tonganoxie youth wins NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition
TES second-grader honored at Chiefs game, could advance to nationals

A Tonganoxie Elementary School student won his division in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Team Championships and was recognized Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. Patrick Griffin, a second-grader at TES, won the 6-7 age-group division. Patrick received a game ball trophy during pregame activities Sunday. The Kansas City Chiefs were hosting the Buffalo Bills in a game the Chiefs won, 30-22. Now 6-5, Kansas City won its fifth consecutive game.

Jarbalo United Methodist Women met Nov. 13 at Talette’s Cafe in Tonganoxie for dinner and a meeting. The group opted to give money to three families to help with their Thanksgiving dinners. Those attending were Ron and Peachez Joles, their granddaughter Ryan Workman, Marilyn Oxley, Rosie Oelschlaeger, Faye Cleavinger , Frances Jeannin, Thamar Barnett and the Rev. Larry Grove and his wife, Mary Lou.

Tonganoxie Public Library has a new inhabitant, but the library needs help in naming the furry friend. Someone recently donated a giant stuffed teddy bear to the library. The bear is residing in the children’s section of the library, but it currently has no name.
Mill Valley claims first state football title
Bishop Miege wins sixth championship in school history

Mill Valley has its first state football title. The Kaw Valley League representative won the Class 5A state championship Saturday with a 35-14 victory against Bishop Carroll at Pittsburg State’s Carnie Smith Stadium. Mill Valley (12-1) busted out to a 21-0 lead against Bishop Carroll (11-2) in the first quarter and never looked back. That turned out to be the difference in the game, as each team scored 14 points the rest of the way.
Tonganoxie High graduate Fatherley vying for Ford honor
Distinction requires social media voting through Dec. 20

A Tonganoxie High School graduate could be one of 30 Ford employees to receive an opportunity to partner with a nonprofit organization. To get that opportunity, she needs some assistance on social media. Lindsey Fatherley, a 2010 THS graduate, works as a team leader over customer service and lease terminations for Ford Motor Credit Company. She is one of roughly 50 Ford employees vying to be one of the “Thirty under 30” selections.

Baldwin girls overwhelm Tonganoxie in season-opening basketball game

Sophomore Abby Ogle poured in 19 points as the Baldwin High School girls overwhelmed a visiting Tonganoxie team, 63-19, Thursday in the season-opening basketball game for both teams.
