Mill Valley has its first state football title.
The Kaw Valley League representative won the Class 5A state championship Saturday with a 35-14 victory against Bishop Carroll at Pittsburg State’s Carnie Smith Stadium.
Mill Valley (12-1) busted out to a 21-0 lead against Bishop Carroll (11-2) in the first quarter and never looked back. That turned out to be the difference in the game, as each team scored 14 points the rest of the way.
MVHS had a balanced attack, passing for 200 yards and rushing for 183. Bishop Carroll, meanwhile, was limited to just 11 rushing yards, though the squad passed for 338 yards.
In 5A, Derby (12-1) defeated Blue Valley (10-3) by a 27-14 score at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium.
Bishop Miege continued its dominant run to the 4A D-I championship with a 68-12 victory against Andover Central (10-3) at Salina District Stadium. The Stags finished the year 12-1 and scored more than 60 points in three of three postseason games. They also scored 50 against Eudora in the substate game. The championship marked Miege’s sixth championship in school history.
Holcomb earned its first state title in 4A D-II with a 21-0 victory against Holton in Salina. Holcomb ended its season 9-4, while Holcomb finished 11-2. It marked Holcomb’s first state appearance, while it was Holton’s seventh appearance in a state title game.
Rossville capped its undefeated season by slipping past previously unbeaten Wichita Collegiate, 20-19 at Hutchinson’s Gowan Stadium. Rossville ended the year 14-0, while Collegiate finished 13-1.
In another thrilling game, Phillipsburg outlasted Troy, 30-29, for the 2-1A title at Lewis Field on the Fort Hays State University campus. PHS (11-2) won its first state title with the victory against Troy (10-2).
The 8-man championships took place Nov. 21 at Fischer Field in Newton. Spearville (13-0) routed Hanover, 62-16, in 8-man Division I. The Wildcats also were undefeated heading into the game, but finished the season 12-1.
And in 8-man D-II, Victoria (13-0) also went undefeated with a 36-28 victory against Attica/Argonia (12-1). The Knights won their second straight title and seventh overall.
All total, five teams (Mill Valley, Andover Central, Holcomb, Troy and Phillisburg) were making their first state appearances with Saturday’s games.
